Step 2 Collecting
The healthcare professional will use the special Virgin Health Bank collection kit to take blood from the umbilical cord - this usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It can be done before or after the placenta has been delivered, but always after your baby has been born and the umbilical cord has been cut.
International regulations also require that a small blood sample from the mother is taken by your healthcare professional which we will then test to check for viruses or infection. This can either be taken immediately before the baby is born or just after the birth (this maternal blood sample needs to be returned to us at the same time as the umbilical cord blood sample).
The collection kit also contains special packaging to ensure that the cord blood unit and the mother's blood sample are safely transported to our laboratory. The nurses performing the collections have been trained in our standard collection and packaging.
Once the collection and packaging are completed the nurse will call us. We will arrange for the courier to collect the samples and transport them safely to our facility.
